Since opening our doors in 2001, Advanced Pediatrics has earned an exemplary reputation for excellence in pediatric care in Vienna, Virginia, and throughout the National Capital Region.

Advanced Pediatrics stands out because we're an independent, practice with a small clinic feel. Parents and children feel welcomed, supported, and understood with this personalized approach.

We offer well-child visits, sick visits, newborn care, mental health services, and most other care their young patients need. We emphasize inclusivity, always welcoming neurotypical, neurodivergent, LGBTQIA+ patients, children with mental health challenges, and children with complex medical needs.

Advanced Pediatrics is an integrative medical facility using traditional and alternative methods of care based on what works best for each child. The practice always emphasizes evidence based medicine for the whole-child’s health.

Advanced Pediatrics makes quality care convenient for parents and children. We offer lab testing, vision and hearing screenings, allergy testing, vaccinations, neuropsychological testing, and other tests on-site. Additionally, Advanced Pediatrics  can send electronic prescriptions to any pharmacy.

The practice continually expands our services and resources, currently offering parenting classes, Saturday hours, Drive-Up clinics, and on-call advice 24-7 through a trusted nurse’s line.

The doctors, advanced practice providers, nursing team, administration professionals, and all members of the Advanced Pediatrics team are dedicated, and compassionate experts with extensive specialized training. Our collaborative approach ensures that every child gets the most personalized and supportive care.

The practice earned the Washington Top Doctors award every year since 2014 and we're affiliated with the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Parents seeking the highest standard of pediatric care with warm and personalized support trust Advanced Pediatrics with their child’s health and wellness.

Small Practice, Big Ideas
Mission, Services & Policies
In a world of big box stores and retail clinics, it is our mission to maintain the feel of a small practice while continuing to deliver big ideas as a leader in pediatric healthcare. How do we do it? Creating a great practice starts and ends with having good people being available when you and your children need us. Established in 2001, we have been serving our local community in this capacity for over two decades. Read on to learn more about our providers, staff, services and policies.
Big Ideas, Excellent Medical Care
Mission, Services & Policies
Educated and trained at some of the finest medical institutions in the country, our doctors and nurse practitioners are here to provide medical care for your children -- from newborns to your college aged child. We offer well child visits (check-ups), sick and consultation appointments. In addition to routine pediatric care , many of our providers have extensive experience caring for children with asthma, food allergies, eczema, reflux, obesity, behavior, developmental and mental health concerns. Our providers are well respected in the medical community and work closely with pediatric specialists at INOVA Children's Hospital in Fairfax, VA, Children's National Medical Center in Washington DC, and Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore, MD. Through these relationships, other learning initiatives and of course, by being parents themselves, our providers are constantly enhancing their clinical skills to provide the best care for your children.

Our doctors not only provide exemplary care, they have contributed to the study and development of new medications, vaccinations, and diagnostic tests. This research tradition spans more than 15 years and elevates Advanced Pediatrics as an innovator in children's health care. While participation in research studies is ALWAYS optional, families are often eager to join in on the fun.
Big Ideas, Excellent Customer Care

How many times have you walked into a medical office to be frowned at by the receptionist? Or left the office not knowing if those labs drawn would be reported to you? Did you ever wonder if the nurse who just helped you even knows your child's name? Not so at Advanced Pediatrics where every staff member is part of a team. From the nurses on the phone day and night, to every person you encounter during your visit, we aim to leave you confident that we know your child, listened to your concerns and have provided optimal medical care and advice.

We hire people who are smart, determined and committed to helping you and your family. It may start with the front desk or nursing staff helping you make an appointment, peak with the doctor caring for your child, and then may end with the nurse calling to see that your child is getting better as expected, to discuss test results, or facilitate a referral. Every person has to be at their best to provide the care that you and your family deserve.
Big Ideas, Excellent Availability

Recognizing that our families live in one of the most hectic metropolitan corridors in the country, we continue to develop services that increase our availability and improve flexibility for busy families. We are open 26 hours beyond the usual 9-5 - including Saturday hours - and offer 44 hours of walk-in clinic each week for evaluation of acute illnesses. For those that prefer scheduled appointments, same-day sick appointments are also available. Appointments are also available to better evaluate chronic or recurrent health issues. Unsure if you need an appointment? Our nurse line is staffed by our very own nurses and is available around the clock to answer your questions - day or even in the middle of the night! Can't remember if you have an appointment? No worries, our automatic appointment reminder system will send you a text or email at multiple intervals to keep you informed.
Big Ideas, Excellent Services

Above and beyond the usual patient-doctor encounter, we offer ancillary services to meet your needs. We have a certified lactation consultant available to meet with you and your baby. We have an onsite high complexity laboratory with phlebotomists who are trained in drawing blood in children of all ages and offer onsite testing and results. Common onsite testing include those for strep throat, flu, mono, urine screens, bilirubin (for jaundice), and cell blood counts for anemia and infection, amongst others. In addition, we can perform more detailed allergy testing, asthma tests, concussion testing (baseline and after an injury), hearing and vision assessments even in young infants in the clinic. We can dispense many medications on site for home use. We provide electronic prescriptions and refills to your desired pharmacy and enable you to access your child's medical records on your phone. We also have parenting classes to help you deal with your newborn baby, picky eating, discipline, your anxious child, learn CPR and other topics. Not satisfied with the status quo, we promise to continue to enhance our services to meet your needs.

Our accomodations include clinic space on two floors in an easily accessible office building in Vienna, VA. Both clinic areas are wheelchair accessible and elevators are present for patient families, and can easily accomodate strollers as well. The clinic also boasts ample on-site parking.
Founder
Richard Schwartz, MD / Founder
(1938-2017)
Dr. Schwartz practiced medicine for 43 years and was the founding physician of Advanced Pediatrics. He received his B.S. in zoology and then studied and trained in pediatric medicine at Georgetown University and Children's National Medical Center in Washington DC. In his lifetime, he travelled to 78 countries, had more than 400 medical articles published, saw hundreds of thousands of patients, trained too many physicians and providers to count and was named to the Washingtonian's List of Top Doctors 10 different years; including as recently as 2016. After a year long battle with cancer, Dr. Schwartz died in March 2017 at home with his loving family by his side. He was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery on June 13, 2017. We here at Advanced Pediatrics owe an enormous debt of gratitude to this brilliant and generous man. He not only built a professional home for us, but has been instrumental in the professional growth of so many of us. His philosophy on pediatric care and the importance of "Thinking Big while Staying Small" was recently highlighted in the Independent Pediatrician Magazine. Even if not here in person, he will forever remain at the heart of Advanced Pediatrics and the work that we do. He is that little voice inside our heads urging us to do more, to do better. He was truly one of a kind.
